Debra Wooding’s CIBC Story

Following in my mother's footsteps

May 11, 2017

Three generations of my family have worked for CIBC – that adds up to over 100 years of service! And it all began with my Mom. She worked at a tiny branch in Grimsby, Ontario in the ‘60s for almost 25 years – first as a teller, then as a Financial Advisor. Growing up in the bank, I saw why my mom was so well loved – she cared deeply about others and even made dinners for sick clients. Cancer eventually took my mom’s life, but my family and The Wooding Group are part of her legacy.

I’m not surprised that I followed in my mother’s footsteps – I think it’s in my blood! I’ve always been a believer in lifelong learning and have worked diligently to become the best Investment Advisor I can be, at CIBC Wood Gundy. My partner and spouse, Tom Wooding, and I eventually merged our professional lives in 1999 to become The Wooding Group. My daughter and son have since joined the practice. Everyone on our team of nine is either ‘like family’ or actually is family! We’re a multi-generational team, which definitely sets us apart from other advisory teams – our clients get to know us as a family, and we get to know them as a family. It builds a sense of trust because they know we’re in this with them.

Professionally, I’m most proud of the depth of trust we’ve built with our clients. A very dear client of mine recently became terminally ill; sadly she didn’t have anyone to talk to about her worries and fears – except us. We helped her get it all out on the table and structure an estate plan that gave her peace of mind, putting her at ease. She brought me to tears when she said “You have made such a difference in my life, thank you.” That’s the bottom line for me: our clients have to know that we’ll do what’s best for them. My mom always said, “Be kind and always do the right thing, even when it’s tough.” To this day, I carry her advice and her old CIBC name badge with me to remind me of our core values and how proud we are to be part of the CIBC family. I owe this all to her.
