Running for a Cause

Supporting Charities That Hold a Special Place in Our Heart

June 7, 2018

Running is hardwired in human beings. For the better part of our existence we needed it for survival. After all, running was the best way to escape animals that wanted to eat us. Nowadays, we run for sport. We run to get our hearts pumping, our blood flowing and our body lean and powerful. We also run to show our support for charities that hold a special place in our heart . We put our body through intense training; sweating buckets, rolling ankles and fighting to the finish line because we care. It’s incredible the strength that comes when people join together for a cause. Here are some local runs in Edmonton that can help you make a difference in your community and around the world.

CIBC Run for the Cure

Date: September 30th, 2018
Location: Rundle Park – 2909 113 Avenue, Edmonton, AB
Cause: Breast Cancer Research and Support

The Wooding Group proudly supports this cause every year. Everyone has been touched in some way by cancer, whether personally or through a friend or family member. Due to its fundraising efforts , the CIBC Run for the Cure has raised over $17 million annually for breast cancer research and support services. The walk/run gives you the option of a 1km or 5km trail, making it accessible to people of all different ages and skill-levels. Drape yourself in pink and stand alongside some incredible men and women as we work towards a future without breast cancer.

Do it for Dads Walk Run

Date: June 17th, 2018 (Father’s Day)
Location: Sir Wilfrid Laurier Park-13221 Buena Vista Rd NW, Edmonton, AB
Cause: Prostate Cancer Research and Support

With the Do it for Dads Walk Run, Father’s Day is about more than just tacky tie purchases and Hallmark cards. It’s a chance to show our dads, grandads, uncles, brothers, husbands and friends how much we care about them and their health. Prostate Cancer is the most common cancer in men, with 1 in 7 Canadian men being diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime. The funds you raise go towards proper screening, early detection, research and supporting those who are diagnosed. Lace up your sneakers and run for dads everywhere.

Pets in the Park (Royal Canin K9 & Tail Blazers)

Date: June 24th , 2018
Location: Hawrelak Park- 9330 Groat Rd NW, Edmonton, AB
Cause: Support for the Edmonton Humane Society

If you love everything cute and fluffy (or scaly and feathered), then the Pets in the Park run is for you. There are two individual events, the Royal Canin “K-9” km run and the Tail Blazers 2.5 km walk. Dogs, cats, lizards and birds are all welcome but need to be properly restrained for the safety of pets and participants. Enjoy a day with your four-legged friends and help provide shelter, medical care and love for abandoned and neglected animals through the Edmonton Humane Society.

Date: August 25th, 2018
Location: Canadian Forces Base, Edmonton Garrison
Cause: Support for Easter Seals Alberta

You know we love any run that has the words “Woman” and “Warrior” side by side! Better yet, this event supports the Easter Seals of Alberta- a charity that supports inclusion, accessibility and future independence for individuals with disabilities and medical conditions. Be aware though this event involves obstacle challenges on the course, so it may be more intense than a typical run. Embrace your inner warrior-woman and test your strength for this worthy cause.

Run for H20

Date: June 23rd, 2018
Location: Herb Belcourt Park ( Formerly Sherwood Park Drive) Sherwood Park, AB
Cause: Support for Hope International Development Agency

Clean water is a basic human right. In Canada, we often take for granted turning on a tap for fresh, consumable water. In other areas of the world, they do not have this luxury. Run for H20 supports people around the globe that need access to healthy drinking water by constructing, and teaching maintenance of, water supply systems. This sets communities up for a bright, and sustainable, future. Also, if you need a running or walking buddy, we heard that two VERY special Wooding Group members will be participating! Can you guess which two?
